What property types does retail property cover?
According to the Commercial Tenancy (Retail Shops) Agreements Act 1985 which is currently active in Perth and WA, a retail business refers to “a business that wholly or predominantly involves the sale of goods by retail”.
Some businesses which are included in this category include:
- Clothing stores
- Grocery stores/supermarkets
- Electronics stores
- Bookstores
- Pharmacy/drugstores
The definition also extends itself to those listed as a “specified business” in the regulations and premises situated in a retail shopping centre used wholly or predominantly for the carrying on of a business. Under this definition a retail business could refer to gyms, beauty salons or travel agents, as long as they are located within a retail shopping cente and not
excluded by regulation.
In some states, such as NSW, gyms and fitness studios are considered retail stores by definition.
